What’s Next? Rebuilding Lives After Leaving Domestic Violence

Rebuilding Lives

What is a second-stage shelter?

Radiance Centre is a second-stage apartment style shelter supporting women, with or without children, for up to one year while they transition back into the community. Second-stage shelters are supported housing and play an important role in the rebuilding of lives and establishing normalcy for those who have left situations of domestic violence. Housing individuals and families for up to 12 months, Radiance Centre is a place for healing and a place to launch their next chapter.

Counselling and group programs

Radiance provides in-house counselling services and group programs to those living within Radiance Centre. This is a crucial piece of the rebuilding process, to allow for healing trauma and building healthy bonds. Our workshops and group programs are curated to meet the specific needs of those currently living in our building. Looking In, Looking Out is a weekly program that allows participants to explore topics such as self-esteem, boundaries, self-care and relationships, as well as share knowledge and reflect on experiences with one another.

Financial empowerment

Establishing financial independence and learning about money management, paying bills and saving for the future is an essential part of rebuilding futures and being set up for success in the future. Many of those who we serve have experienced some level of financial abuse throughout their life. They may not have had access to family funds or credit cards, or have not been able to work or have a say in their employment or income because of their partners influence or interference. Radiance has partnered with Momentum to establish a financial literacy program that includes both an educational element to build their confidence as well a matched savings program where participants can work towards a purchase goal (i.e. a down payment on an apartment, a computer for school or work, a vehicle, etc.).

Additional support

The year that women and their families spend at Radiance Centre is full of changes, we provide additional support to ease the transition. An example of this would be our onsite childcare services that help ensure that women can attend all appointments, meetings and have time for themselves. Another helpful support is our food security programs and partnerships, which provides bread, milk and eggs, and canned goods to help offset rising grocery costs. Additionally, we work with an Elder and Knowledge Kepper who will smudge with families and provide support to our Indigenous women and families through story telling.

Set for success

Leaving domestic violence is not just about physical safety, it is about rebuilding lives and the empowerment to build a future filled with happiness and choice. Through our wide array of residential and outreach services, Radiance aims to work with those who find shelter and support with us towards success when they leave our building and move into their own home.
