Thanks to the generosity of the Owen Hart Foundation, 12 families at Radiance received new backpacks to help make the return to school a little easier!
The beginning of a new school year can bring excitement, renewed routines and opportunities for children to reconnect with teachers and friends. For families rebuilding their lives after domestic violence, however, it can also bring additional emotional and financial pressures.
Additional financial pressures for families in shelter
The cost of backpacks, school supplies, clothing, transportation and other essentials can add up quickly. Parents may be managing these expenses while also navigating housing, legal matters, appointments and the many other responsibilities involved in creating greater safety and stability for their families.
As we shared in our recent article, Back to School While Living in a Shelter: Why Connection Matters, children may also be adjusting to a new school, travelling from an unfamiliar neighbourhood or finding ways to answer questions about changes in their lives.
Support with something as practical as a backpack can make a meaningful difference during this transition. It helps ease some of the financial pressure on parents while giving children something new to carry into the school year. A new backpack can help a child feel prepared, included and more confident as they walk into their classroom.
