Kiel’s Story

Feature Story: Kiel
At the tender age of six, Kiel was far more mature than one would expect. He watched the other children in daycare play but stayed on the sidelines.
The staff at Radiance’s Children’s Centre recognized Kiel’s maturity was not a quirky personality trait— it was a response to trauma. He was carrying burdens far beyond what a child should, taking on the weight of protecting his mother and siblings in a household affected by violence. It stole the carefree moments childhood is meant to hold.
At Radiance, Kiel found safety, understanding, and a place to heal. As Kiel re-engaged in age-appropriate activities and discovering the simple joys of being a six-year-old, his need to protect his mother and his siblings lessened. Our child therapist encouraged him to play, explore, and learn to express his feelings. Then one day, Kiel picked up a toy and quietly joined in with the other children in his daycare group. That small step said everything. He was beginning to feel safe again. It is because of donors like you that moments like this are possible.
