Ingredients for Belonging

Traditions are more than just habits— they are waypoints that pass wisdom, values, and identity from one generation to the next. They offer a steady connection and belonging.
Food has long been a tool for connection— a universal language— alive in the scent of a grandmother’s recipe, the dusting of flour on a countertop, the dishes that mark life’s milestones.
Families at Radiance come from a beautiful tapestry of cultures and backgrounds. As they celebrate seasonal milestones, moments of togetherness are a vital part of their healing journey. But for a family living in shelter, traditions that once brought comfort and connection can suddenly feel out of reach.
Our Cultural Liaison Worker, Laila, shares how a mother in our shelter spoke about her heartache in not being able to provide her children with the same spirit of Ramadan she felt growing up— the energy, joy and warmth of a home filled with life, and of a community filled with connection and celebration.
To create a space where that could be a reality, Laila organized a fast-breaking potluck where families could connect, and hosted a special gathering where mothers and children made traditional shortbread cookies that are a cherished staple for families preparing for Eid.
The experience goes beyond simply eating together. In the act of preparing and sharing food, relationships deepen and communities are strengthened. Mothers pass memories down to their children. Culture is learned and preserved. Women share strength and knowledge with one another.
Around a table, stories are told and a sense of belonging takes root. What begins as a meal becomes something deeply meaningful— a space where connection is nurtured and traditions live on.
Help make that kind of special experience available to more families as they shape their next chapter. Learn more about giving at https://radiancesociety.ca/get-involved/
