‘Second-stage Shelter’ – it’s a term that we use all the time to describe Radiance Centre, but what does it mean and what do we do? Let’s dive in.
An introduction to Radiance
Our second-stage shelter provides a safe home and support programs for women with or without children for up to one year, generally moving into our building from an emergency shelter. Radiance is more than just housing. We are a team of professionals who offer supports aimed at empowering clients who are doing the deep work to achieve their personal goals surrounding safety, future planning and independence.
The first few weeks
An experience at Radiance looks a little bit different for everyone. This is because of our belief that we need to meet women and their children where they are at in their journey. And everyone has a different journey and is at a different place in their journey.
When a woman arrives at Radiance Centre, their Case Manager spends time understanding from them what they feel are the priorities and goals they need to focus on. We use research-based tools that guide this work that have been found to be critical in empowering women with experience of domestic violence to build a new life. The program plan is a partnership with them informed by this assessment that focuses on distinct areas including safety; accommodation; support networks; legal issues; health and well-being including faith and culture; money; children; work and learning; empowerment and self-esteem. It’s at Radiance they get to do the deep work. This takes time.
Progress tracking and children’s programming
We review each woman’s progress toward her goals every three months, recognizing that situations and priorities for women and their children can change. Some women may not have initially moved in with their children due to circumstances related to domestic violence and abuse but have since gained custody while living at Radiance.
We are intentional in providing individualized support for children, often through play-based activities, to help them heal from the trauma of domestic violence. Additionally, we offer specialized support that strengthens the parent-child attachment by working with both the mother and her child.
At Radiance, we understand that children have their own unique experiences and healing journeys. Through our specialized supports, we work to mitigate the negative effects of adverse childhood experiences, which, if left unaddressed, can contribute to developmental delays or lifelong mental and physical health challenges.
Why second-stage is so important
Leaving an abusive relationship is only the first step in a survivor’s journey. Many women face ongoing safety risks, financial instability, legal challenges, and emotional trauma long after escaping their abuser. Radiance Centre offers a safe and stable environment where survivors can access the resources needed to regain autonomy, heal from trauma, and establish a strong foundation for the future.
