Community Support in Action

“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured
by the compassionate actions of its members.”
– Coretta Scott King

As a community, we have left an amazing impact on those healing from violence over the holidays. This season, 19 families were adopted through the Adopt-A-Family program, and we were pleased to offer new opportunities for residents to shop for gifts, basic needs, toys and more.

Thank you to all who participated in these programs and brought the magic of the holidays to women and children impacted by domestic violence.

The Sonshine Centre received 10 gift hampers, stockings from QuadReal, and many generous gifts from Purses of Hope and The Shoe Box Project. Thank you to ConocoPhillips and their amazing team of volunteers who made The Spirit of Christmas event possible! Your contributions made the holidays brighter and more joyous for those spending them at the centre.

Calgary Christian Elementary School and The Calgary Canucks organized a toy drive which allowed us to transform our boardroom into Santa’s Workshop and host our first-ever ‘Shop for Mamas’ event for mothers at the Sonshine Centre. Community support like this makes a huge difference for the women and children who have fled from violence in search of safety, shelter, and healing at Sonshine.

We would like to express our gratitude to organizations such as Parkland Corporation, Suncor Energy and Foothills Medical Centre for their donations of clothing, toys and household items. Their initiative and generosity are life-changing for Sonshine’s residents.

Our incredible team of volunteers made it all possible by supporting our programs such as Adopt-A-Family, Shop for Mamas and Shop for Kids. Huge thank you to those who have donated their time and efforts in making the holiday season special for our residents.

The 2022 holiday season brought many blessings, joy, and hope to the Sonshine Centre. We are very grateful to our generous community of volunteers, donors, and sponsors for their ongoing support of our residents and their children.

We’re looking forward to strengthening our work over the next twelve months through community partnerships, advocacy and education. If you would like to get involved as a community partner, please contact philanthropy@sonshine.ca
